...this was my first outing with the motor on my Lowe 1457 and it was not without some problems.

It would start on the third pull, one for choke and then two to start. It idled fine and the gears worked without extra noise.

The previous owner installed a new hose fitting on the tank that did not fit properly. Every few minutes it would pop off and I notices that rpm picked up significantly until I reconnected the hose and primed it. Then it sounded and felt like it was running at 1/2 throttle.

Is this due to a lean condition or a symptom of running rich under normal operation.

I used the 1/2 tank of fuel the previous owner gave me but I should have started fresh I am sure.

I would very much appreciate help with the following:

- Spark plug number and gap.

- Instructions on when and how to adjust mixture on the front of the motor.

- Max and idle rpm.

- Recommended prop if this one needs replacement.

Any other information would be great.

Model number of the motor would be helpful. First, I would get the correct fitting and try it again.

Your motor is running on one cylinder. Now the challenge is to find out why. Your story suggests a ruptured fuel pump diaphragm, Remove the fuel pump from the motor (leave hoses connected), then pump the primer bulb. If gas squirts out the hole in the backside of the pump, the diaphragm is bad. That will flood out the cylinder to which it is mounted on.

It's a 1979 6904E

I will definitely replace the fuel fitting, fuel and plugs and points if I can find them locally. I didn't even check to see if both cylinders were firing but it sure idles nice.

1979 would not have points - it's CDI (breakerless). Definitely check for spark and compression before moving further. Could be bad powerpack, coil, wiring, or even a blown head gasket (often evidenced by beads of water on the plug).
Those old twins will idle just fine on one cylinder and have fooled a lot of folks...
