i have a 7.5 fleet twin i bought earlier this year. when i got it i put a new water pump in it and a new prop seal. it now pops out of forward gear i dont know if it did it before i did not run it prior to work. i do know that nuetral is not in the middle. you have to put it more in the forward range the gears look good in the lower unit. is there an adjustment for this. please help i need it for duck season thank you Tim Gaskin

you need to get the shift linkage adjusted right. It is probably in the shift linkage you took loose to get the lower unit off to change the impeller. Don't know what year it is so cannot guide you any further.

If the connector for the shift rod is the same as in the picture, you need to take the screw out completely so that it can catch the shift rod in the recessed area.

Re: evinrude 7.5 pops out of gear

on that one you have to take the powerhead off to get to the shift rod. Take the powehead back off and pull your shift rod up. Undo the two 3/8 nuts holding it on. Push the shift rod all the way down then put shift handle in the matching position so the connector is all the way down also. then put the nuts back on. It should be lined up then. If not then there is an adjustment on the shift handle itself.

I am betting that the tab that acts as the detent spring inside the gearcase has either been bent or is broken. Did you do anything to that when you were in there to replace seals?

a manual is best to tell you. I don't have one to look at in front of me.

send a pic of the shifter handle from the side where it attaches and I will see if it's like my 15.

I'm pretty sure there isn't any adjustment on the handle for the 5.5/7.5 series - the handle and shaft are one piece...

Re: evinrude 7.5 pops out of gear

Like Chinewalker said, there is no shift handle adjustment on that motor. Also, the gearshift's normal position is a little forward than most. Open the lower unit and check the detent spring. Then check the clutch dog and gears. Any rounding on the clutch/gear lobes will cause it to pop out of gear. You can also try flipping the clutch dog, but that's a short term fix.
