evinrude 7,5hp 1953 Neutral clucht, pictures included

Hello i was bought a 1953 evinrude 7.5hp model 7512 aprt and almost all back together. In the picture you can see a rod that i am not sure where it goes too?? What is it used for also ?? thanks....john

The flat bar in the picture is a spring, which pulls on the rod. The other end of the rod attaches to the neutral lever assembly. It makes the system snap positively into neutral or drive position when you pull the knob up or push it down. It's been a few years since I've looked at one, but I have one out in the shop I can refresh my memory on if need be.

Well, I had a couple of those but it's been a long time. What's with the wire stickin out the side?

Hello thank you for the usefull information! Do you think the flat bar spring is in the right location ? it looks like it is ....and i am not sure where to hook up the other end of the rod to the neutral lever assembly? I have looked at it...would you have a photo of how it connects.
your explaination of what it does makes sence!!

Well, I went out and took a picture. Then I put the memory card in the camera and went out and took another picture. Then I turned on the flash and went out and took another picture. Then I Photoshoped it. Anyhoo, maybe this will help. Shown in neutral (up) position.
