i have a 82 rude 70hp got it used guy said it worked but its having problems with no power in gear revs fine in neutral, in gear it boggs at 2k rpm but in reverse it seems to have plenty power, i changed all coils, plugs, and put new exaust gasket on while lookin for restrictions, it has good spark at all plugs and it seems to be getting fuel because when i push the choke when it bogging it dies, by the way compression is 105 in all cylinders, im in the process of cleaning the carbs right now any advice or tricks would be appreciated, thanks dave from daytona

..."guy said it worked but its having problems"...

how many times we've heard that? LOL

Classic symptom of clogged hi-speed jets.

Sounds like you're on the right track. Go ahead and order 3 carb kits, about $12 apiece. Save you from having to do it again. You will love the way it performs with fresh carbs.

Make sure you have fresh fuel, no water or debris in the tank.

Get yourself a shop manual, I highly recommend the factory manual. Will pay for itself over and over and over.

If you don't know the age of the water pump impeller or if it's more than 2 years, replace it at your next opportunity.

Check out the "decarb" thread in the Engine FAQ section -- 105 PSI seems a few pounds low for an engine of that vintage, but consistency across all 3 cyl is very very good..

welcome to iboats.

Re: evinrude 70 bogging down in gear

well my rude 70 worked one time now its back to bogging, ive rebuilt all carbs, replaced the timer base cause it wasnt testing properly but still bogging down, i checked the stator output voltage the book says it should be 220 volts and im only getting 160 volt does anyone think that i should go ahead and buy new one, it would suck to spend $150 with no results, would low voltage from the stator make the engine bog,? any advice would be apprciated thanks Dave from Daytona

You mean rebuilt the carbs again or were you talkin bout when you did that last month? Did you install new carb kits?

Did you link & sync after your carb rebuild?

In my experience, bogging is almost always the result of one cylinder dropping out when you accelerate. It's not dying is it? Just won't plane out?

Low voltage from the stator would make the spark plugs not spark. None of them. The motor wouldn't start.

Are you measuring peak AC voltage with a peak reading meter, or a DVA adpator on your multimeter? or an oscilliscope?

Do a spark test with an inline tester set at 7/16" (see the Engine FAQ section of iboats for how-to). And a compression test (to see if anything changed since the last one).
