I have just got my evinrude 70 started after a long period laid up. It was running fine at idle but just recently it seems to not remain at idle anymore and start speeding up on it's own.

I am running the engine out of water using a flusher so I don't want it to run above idle speed.

Any thoughts??

Ben

Hi, Benibell.

With no load, a 2 stroke will rev up if the mixture goes lean.

I would investigate the fuel supply with attention to the filter and fuel pump.

Good luck. :)

Well it's got a VRO unit which I did think was working fine but maybe it's not. The filter is clean and I've got new fuel so I will try and bypass the VRO and try that.

Re: Evinrude 70 running on

If this motor has set for a spell I would be amazed if the carb porting was not fouled with gummy deposits. This lends creedance to JB's suggestion of lean mix.My recommendation would be to remove the carbs and give them a good cleaning. Also inspect the linkage to insure it's not sticky and holding the carb flaps open a bit.You didn't say what year model the engine was as to whether the fast idle lever could be not returning the flaps back to closed position after starting.(ie sticky cables)

It is an 87 model. I did remove the carbs and clean them all out. When I started it and ran it for a couple of minutes it ran fine, just sat there and idled like a dream although needed a good degree of choke to get it and keep it going at first.
