I recently purchased a boat with a 1974 evinrude 70hp hustler motor. The motor is appears to be in excellent shape. I have started it but in water when put in gear, it stalls and dies. when out of water it will rev up in gear. It was winterized so i do not think that old gas gummed up the carbs. i have changed all plugs and it seems to firing on all 3 cyls. It does have a melted rubber type of goo running down from the stator. Some one told me this meant the stator was bad. Will this cause this type of problem?

Hi, Wikelam.

You may have a bad stator, but that has nothing to do with your other problem.

My guess is that the idle was set with the engine not under load, in the water. This is a common error.

It is possible that you have other problems, though. You need a compression check and you need to verify that all three cylinders are making power. If you can disable the spark to a cylinder at idle without affecting the idle speed you have a dead cylinder.

Let us know what you find. :)

I suspect that you are needing a new top main crankshaft seal... You mention the black goo and it's probably being rinsed off the ignition components by gas leaking around the top seal.

Try putting it in gear and immediately throttling up and see if it runs better at higher rpms... Replacing the top seal might be a job that can be done without pulling the powerhead apart.

Keep us posted,

Tom
