Do you know the historyof this motor?

From here, I would guess that your problem is in the fuel delivery system (tank, lines, pump, carb). Sounds like it might be running lean.

Good Luck
HAVE FUN!

Hmmm.

Could be a lot of things, Eddy, but I think your engine is okay.

Wrong prop? Could it be cavitating?

Wrong rig? Is the engine too high on the transom or too short for the transom. That would cause it to ventilate the prop.

Wrong trim? If the engine is trimmed out too far it would be hard to get on plane, then ventilate the prop.

Spun hub? If your prop hub is loose it might start to slip only after the engine gets high on it's torque curve.

Since you just bought the boat, I think it is most likely a wrong shaft length or wrong rigging.

The anti-ventilation plate should be level with the bottom of the boat, the shaft should be perpendicular to boat bottom at neutral trim.

The prop should allow the engine to reach, but not exceed the top of the operating rpm range with a light load.

Good luck. :)
