Hello everyone, I am new to this site and to outboard engines. I just bought a 12' jon boat with a 1984 Evinrude 8hp motor on it. I have replaced the throttle cable, rebuilt the carb, replaced the fuel pump, replaced the impeller, replaced the rewind spring and replaced the thermostat. The problem I'm having is this, after running at full speed for about 1 minute it stalls after it revs up and down for a few seconds. Then I have problems getting it to start again unless I wait 5 minutes or so. Does anyone know what is going on? Any help would be appreciated. If you need more information let me know. Thanks!

Re: Evinrude 8hp fuel problem.

Did you try pumping the primer bulb when it started to die?
Sounds like you could have an air leak, or other fuel supply issue.

Re: Evinrude 8hp fuel problem.

did you remove and clean # 24 the high speed jet? http://shop2.evinrude.com/ext/index.aspx?s1=bf6ad09c53cead335fcfd8a6471c0f7f

also check your spark when it dies, could be coil heating up and failing. if you have no spark at all then power pack, if spark on only one cylinder, swap the coils positions, if the problem follows the coil replace the coil, if problem stays with the cylinder replace the power pack.

Re: Evinrude 8hp fuel problem.

Thanks for the fast replies. Pumping the primer bulb does seem to keep it running but not strong. I assumed that meant it was a fuel pump problem but that was incorrect. I'm not sure I'm willing to put any more money into this motor, I've already got more than it's worth invested, not including labor. I was hoping it would be an adjustment of some sort. Oh, yes I cleaned #24. I really do appreciate your help!

I'll check the spark, hopefully it's a coil issue and not the power pack. I appreciate your help guys, thanks again!

If pumping the primer bulb makes a difference, then there's at least some kind of problem in your fuel system. Check all your fuel line connections for possible air leaks. You might also want to try a different tank and hose if you have one available.

Re: Evinrude 8hp fuel problem.

I bought a new hose and that didn't fix it, I don't have another tank at my disposal. I was running it for a few minutes last night and I noticed that the primer bulb stayed flat after I squeezed it. The motor was running fine in neutral, it only seems to be a problem when I take it for a ride. I'm wondering if there's a problem with the tank. I guess I'll figure it out or the motor is gonna go for a swim :)

Re: Evinrude 8hp fuel problem.

The bulb being sucked flat sounds like a vent problem. Verify the vent is open and/or open the gas cap.

edit: make sure the bulb arrow points toward the motor.

Re: Evinrude 8hp fuel problem.

It could also be a plugged inlet screen in the tank. Us OMC boys don't take kindly to your remarks about taking it for a swim. Sounds like your frustrated but help is here for the motor, not you. From what you say in your opening thread it sure sounds to me that your running out of gas. With your comment about the primer being flat that makes me think even more you running out of gas. Try it again with the vent open. If your not certain it's open then leave the fill cap ajar. What ype of tank do you have? If it is an OMC steel tank you can pull the pick-up line and have a look at the filter screen. Hang in there, we're all rooting for you. Rick.

Easy, easy, I figured it out, I decided to buy a new gas tank after the primer bulb thing and that fixed the problem. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your help! BTW, I'd never throw the engine in the water, I've got too much money invested! Stay cool!!!

It's kind of like drowning your kids. Very frowned upon. Glad to here your back up and running. You could fix that tank for no money. Best of luck. Rick.

Re: Evinrude 8hp fuel problem.

Paid $22.00 for a brand new 6 gallon tank with a brand new inlet plug. I work at a marine supply store, which is nice. I got some of the parts for pretty cheap. Unfortunately, we don't stock items for this motor, so most of the parts were special order from Sierra. Either way I paid alot less than I should have to rebuild this thing. I never intended to throw the motor in the water, just a little frustrated, that's all.
