I want to check the points & condensor on my 9.5. The nut seems to be on quite tight on the flywheel. What's the trick to keep the flywheel from turning when trying to remove the nut? Also, how many lbs do I have to retighten it once I put it back on?

Re: Evinrude 9.5 flywheel removal

I slip two drill bits (or bolts) into a couple of open holes on top of flywheel and use a big screw driver (or pry bar) for leverage to loosen (and tighten) flywheel nut.

After you loosen nut, back nut out to just 1/8" above threads and bang with hammer while pulling flywheel up, might rotate grip while banging down on nut...

not sure of torque specs

40 to 45 Foot punds.

Use a puller - the holes for the screws are under the insert below the nut.

A safe and easy way to loosen it is use an air impact gun.

In a pinch, you can place a 2x4 between the prop and the anti-cav plate. Set your torque wrench to about 60ft-lbs and if it clicks don't try to force it any harder. (This is a good way to spin a hub if your nut is really stuck)

I've used the 2x4 trick, and also the large screw driver between the teeth of the flywheel and the motor. You also could put it in gear and hold prop with one foot, but if the nut is REALLY tight, the 2x4 is the trick. First choice is the air impact wrench.

Make sure that you use a puller and hardened bolts to remove flywheel once the nut is off.

Make doubly sure that you use a torque wrench to tighten it to spec when done. If you don't you will be removing the flywheel again and replacing parts.

I found that my DeWault grinder removal tool fits almost perfect in the two holes.
