I just purchased a 1972 Evinrude 9.5. As I intend to run it the rest of my life I would like to get an original OMC owners manual, service/shop manual, and a parts manual.

I see Ken Cook Company, http://ww3.kencook.com/, has them and I can get all three for $60.

Anyone out there ever buy any manuals from Ken Cook Co.? Are they originals or copies? If copies, are they good quality (readable)?

Any better source that you can pass along?

Re: Evinrude 9.5 Manuals

To my knowledge there are 2 manuals...service/shop & parts. What is the other one you mention? $60 does not seem out of ordinary for 2 manuals although the parts manual is only about 14 pages. You have to be diligent to find specific year model manuals on ebay.

Re: Evinrude 9.5 Manuals

The other one, the owner's manual, is the one that came with the motor when it was bought originally.

If I have the shop/service manual, do I need an owner's manual? Is there anything in the owner's manual that's not in the shop/service manual?

Thanks,

Re: Evinrude 9.5 Manuals

Glad to see you finally find your motor.

By the way, one thing that I used to do when I used my 9.9 on my car-topper, which if I remember right you basically intend to do, was to get a wheel barrow inner tube, blow it up about 3/4 full & use it as a pillow to lay the motor on in the trunk or back of the pickup.

Good Luck with your "new" motor

Re: Evinrude 9.5 Manuals

Cruncher,

The owner's manual has instructions on things like fuel/oil mix ratios, specifications such as HP, weight, etc, starting instructions, and so forth. Mine is approx 5 x 8 and around 25 pages. Warranty info is also included. If you know the basics of outboards & boating you can get by without it. The info contained therin is similar to the general info one sees in a manual such as a Seloc repair manual, only it is specific to one particular engine. The owner's manual does not have shop/service type info with the exception of spark plug #'s, lower unit draining & filling, and carb adjustments. FWIW, this is one type of manual that pops up on ebay somewhat more than the OEM service manuals. Bidding typically gets to about $12-15 dollars for one in good shape...sometimes much less though ;) .

I love crappie fishing too...where do you fish?

Re: Evinrude 9.5 Manuals

Sounds like I really don't need an owner's manual. I have been driving an outboard (1956 5.5HP Johnson and some others) most of my life, also ex-USCG, so basic outboard safety, starting, running, etc. are not a problem.

I want to do most of my own maintenance though so I need the service manual.

I understand the parts manual is also useful for it's exploded views of how everything comes apart and goes back together - plus, I assume, part numbers for everything.

Comments?????

I have been fishing the same couple of lakes in north-central Minnesota for a couple of weeks each year since the mid 50's. I'm going for 4 weeks this year, two in the spring and two in the fall. That's primarially what I wanted my motor for. I hate paying motor rental. Here, in the Pacific Northwest, I fish various ponds and reservoirs for perch, bluegill, crappie, catfish, whatever. . . . .

Thanks,

Re: Evinrude 9.5 Manuals

I had a 1969 9.5 and here where the specs for it:

Fuel mix 50:1
SAE 85W90 LU oil
Plugs QL77JC4
Prop 8 1/8 X 8

That is all I remember. Hope this helps.

These motors, I found out, were very underpowered. If I had to make an educated guess I would say that they are closer to 7-8 HP. But mine was very very dependable.

Re: Evinrude 9.5 Manuals

You will want the service manual & the parts manual does have the helpful exploded diagrams & part #'s. Some parts are no longer offered and some of the #'s have changed.

NathanY: I have a '57 10HP Johnson that is a bit stronger than my '69 9.5. I don't know if it is 'that' much stronger though. The '69 Johnson owner's manual recommends the Champion J4J, which has now been superseeded to the J4c. The factory 'parts' manual for that engine first recommends the J4J, then the Auto-Lite A21X (also superseeded) and finally the AC M24K (don't know if that one is still around). Most people I have discussed plugs with prefer the Champions for the old John-Rudes. Also, although the hypoid gear oil was recomended when these engines were first made, the modern replacements are much superior, just the same as with the 2-cycle oils now available.
