Just got a evinrude 9.5 and was running it in a barrel for the first time. After I shut it down there was a roll pin sticking out of the part that engages the flywheel, didn't know what it was for so I took it out. After hearing the spring unwind I knew what it was. How do I get the spring rewound and the roll pin back in place? I turned the screw inside until it wouldn't turn anymore, but the roll pin wouldn't go in as the screw was in the way.

(Manual Starter Cord Installation)
(This pertains to the vertical type of Manual Starters such as the 9.5hp and later 4.5/6/8hp models etc)
(J. Reeves)

1 - Have a pair of vice grips handy set so that they will grab the top of the starter spindle tightly but will not damage it.

2 - Using a large screwdriver inserted into the top of the starter spindle, wind the starter in a counter clockwise direction 12 to 14 turns, stopping so that the cord locking slot is facing the away from the engine.

3 - Lock the spindle in that position with the vice grips, letting the vice grips lay against the flywheel.

4 - Insert the cord as needed and make sure it is retained properly at that slot.

5 - Feed the cord out the starter cord hole at the front of the engine and attach the handle.

6 - Grip the cord tightly so that the spindle cannot spin around rapidly, then release the vice grips.

7 - Allow the cord to be withdrawn slowly around the spindle.

Now... before doing anything else.

What screw are you speaking of? There is no screw associated with that manual starter.

for lack of not knowing what the proper terms of an outboard motor are, the screw I was refering to is what you call the top of the starter spindle.

Joe Reeves, thanks for the very detailed instructions for rewinding the spring on the recoil, after doing this I couldn't get the roll pin to go back in. Right now I have a cotter pin holding everything together. As I look into the black plastic thing that engages the flywheel, the hole in the sleeve (brass piece) and the starter spindle don't exactly line up allowing the roll pin to go in. Without the spring tight, the pin will go in very easy, not so when it's tight. any hints? thanks

The roll pin must be installed when everything is at a "rest"..... no tension on anything. It's actually fairly easy. I don't understand why you're having a battle with it. I realize that the slope on the spindle, the hole in the outer metal shell (spool), and the top slot of the aluminum portion of the spring support shaft, must be aligned... but it's not too difficult. Keep at it, you'll get it.
