Re: evinrude blew up!

Most any of them will work up until 96' model I believe. Then there are adapters for the newer motors to older models...As long as they have the big red plug, they should match right up.....

Re: evinrude blew up!

you need a new motor that has the same wiring harness plug as yours, johnson or evinrude. the throttle and shift cables will work.. open your cover and see what you have. the big red plug? if you get a new one with trim and tilt and you don't have it now you will need a new controller.

Re: evinrude blew up!

where is "the big red plug" located.

also, my gear shifter has an "up/down" for tilt and trim but it wasnt on there when i got the boat. did they put tilt/trim on all 1989 basstrackers with 40 horse? if the shifter has the button, does that mean it had it, and it went bad on the guy i got it off of?

Re: evinrude blew up!

any with will, the newer model have a different plug, and the adapter is expensive. the shifter is equiped for trim & tilt. the previous owner probably just didn't chose to pay for it on the motor when he bought it. be careful look at the plate on your boat for the maximum hp rating for the boat. if you go higher you are putting yourself in deep poo if you have an accident and someone is injured.

it is rated for 60hp.

do you know this: if i find a motor with a trim motor, can i simply hook it up and it be ready wired to trim and tilt?

Re: evinrude blew up!

also, would it be wise for me to mix my gas in the tank in place or using the VRO?

this would not hurt the motor would it?

and if the motor has sat a little, it might be best to just mix it to make sure right?

50:1??????

what would that be???oz per gal?

Re: evinrude blew up!

50-1 is 16oz oil to 6 gallons of gas. if you by a vro there are specific setps to disable the oil pump, if you want to premix. there is a lot of debate about the vro, it seems at lot of the originals failed an cause damage. they say the newer ones are more reliable. it is my opinion, that the vro came about because of boats going to built in 20 & 30 gallon tanks, making it hard to guess how much oil to put in. i find no problem mixing a 6 gallon tank. if all the wires are intack you should have no problem with trim and tilt. remember an older motor that has been maintained properly, can the worth more than a newer motor that has been neglected. i have bought 4 motors off ebay with good luck. you have to ask the right questions. if you get intellegent answers, and there feedback is good & your gut feels right go for it. damn that was long.
