I have a 15 hp evinrude 1996. I recently replaced the thermostat which was spraying water inside the engine cover. I thought this would solve the problem of bogging down when the engine got hot but it still does this. It starts great and runs great for about a 1/2 hour. After the engine cools again it will start and run fine. I posted this notice earlier but didn't wasn't too sure about the responses.

Is it overheating? Can you put your fingers on the cylinder head w/o getting burned when it stops/ (The cylinder head should not get hotter than 150 to 160 F max.) How long has it done this? When was the water pump last changed?

Any other symptoms just before it stops?

When it is at operating temperature you should be able to hold your fingers on the head for a steady three count. You probably need to change your impeller in the lower unit. This is basically your water pump.

If the problem persists after you do the water pump and you run in salt water you may have to pull the head and exhaust cover to clean the salt water crud out of the water passages. Check thermostat too.
