i just got a used 1971 selectric model & bought controls for it, etc

Now my question is this:

do i connect the controls direct to the battery, or am i supposed to use connections to a box i found in my boat near transom, and connect that box to the battery?

i have a 1962 Arkansas Traveller which originally had a Gale V4 on it.
What is that white box i see? does it match the boat, or the motor?

do i remove it and connect direct or use that box to protect my battery somehow?

*yes i have the manual. and have read it.

the box you have could be valuable, it was for the old gale, johnson, evinrude motors. you connect the red positive cable to the top large post on solenoid, and the negative cable to the grounding post on the block of the motor, red to pos on battery, neg to battery.. do not get the cables pos & ned crossed you you will damage the electrics in the motor. you should have a yellow plug on the motor and yellow on the end of the cable, they go together.

that box does not go with the motor. It goes with the old Gale and others. The older electric start motors did not have solenoid under the cowl. The solenoid is inside that box along with a voltage regulator if the Gale had a generator. Put it on AOMCI.org and someone will buy it.

now when i turn the key, i get a snap followed by what sounds like buzzing or crackling, in the solenoid.

if i turn the key again, i get nothing. wait a few seconds and the crackling sound comes back.

obviously im going to grind a clean surface onto all contact points, but does it sound like my solenoid is shot tho?
