I am new to boating and have a cooling question about my 1962 40 hp. At low speed I have water flow through the engine but above 1/2 throttle no water comes outthe **** hole. When the motor is taken back down to a speed where the water is coming out the water is hot but not scalding and drops in temp in a few minutes. The water pump was serviced by a evinrude repair shop this year. Boat runs fine, just worried.

These motors do not have a reliable tell-tale out of that exhaust port. When you're at low speed there is plenty of backpressure on the exhaust, and the water can shoot out of the hole. When you're up on plane, you lose the back pressure because the exhaust is sucked out due to the forward motion of the boat. About the only way to really tell is to take the cover off, run it for a bit, and put your hand on the head (probably shut it off first). If you can hold it there for a count of 3, then it's probably OK. If it burns the s**t out of you something's wrong ;)
Another way is, if after running it, and you come back to slow/idle speed, NO steam should ever come out of the exhaust port. Hot water, yes, steam, no!
Also, keep your fingers and sleeves out of the flywheel
