Lower Unit is disconnected(removed) and the Impeller is removed from the drive shaft. In Forward or Reverse Gear, should the drive shaft be able to rotate CW and CCW by hand? Or should it only be able to rotate CW in Forward and CW in Reverse. When in either forward or reverse gear, I can rotate the shaft by hand both CW and CCW. Is this normal??? Would appreciate an answer so that I can reattach to motor or do I still have a problem....Thanks for any help offered!

Prop rotation does not matter the drive shaft always rotates clockwise. You can turn the driveshaft any way you want until the waterpump is installed ,then has to go clockwise for the impeller to be installed correctly.

You should be able to rotate the driveshaft CLOCKWISE in all gears.----You should be able to rotate it COUNTERCLOCKWISE in all gears.--------During operation the driveshaft always turns CLOCKWISE.

Gear shifting (fwd/neutral/rev) is done in the lower unit (the bullet) not at the engine end of the leg. Since the engine always runs clockwise, the shaft will also run clockwise. But to answer your question, yes you can turn it either way. But if you are replacing an impeller, turn the shaft clockwise to make sure the vanes on the impeller point CCW as the shaft turns clockwise.

I think maybe there is a discrepancy in terms.

The vertical shaft will be able to spin in either direction until impeller in stalled then you should only spin it CW.

The prop shaft can spin in either direction in neutral. In forward, if the vertical shaft is held firm, the prop shaft should not spin ccw. In reverse with vertical shaft held firm, prop shaft won't spin either way.

Thanks very much for the replies folks. I knew that the drive shaft normally only turns clockwise when every thing is back together but 'Panic' set in
when I was able to rotate the shaft by hand counter clock wise and the prop turned CCW. If I didn't have so much trouble reattaching the SHIFT ROD,
it has taken me 1.5 -2 hours the one time that I have done that, then I wouldn't be in a 'Panic" mode!!!...THANKS BIG TIME for assurance and answers.
