Be careful, the 1960's 40 hp takes a different shift switch than most newer/bigger motors. The switches look alike and you can only tell by doing a continuity test. If you use the wrong switch it will either break a clutch spring or twist off the drive shaft as soon as you put the control in reverse.

Welcome to iboats. you know this is the 3rd time in 24 hours you have ask this. what year motor, what are you trying to do? connect new controls to an old motor? what color is the round plug you have? is it male of female. what is electra shift. model # of motor would tell us a lot. be patient when you post to get answers. multiple post, people start to ignore you.

As F_R says, test the continuity of your lower unit so you know what's what BEFORE you fire it up and start throwing switches. You do NOT want to ruin that old electric shift lower unit. If you have the old-style 40HP Big Twin that has a recoil pull start in addition to electric start, you can test your lower unit's style by using a car battery and a set of jumper cables. Stick nails into the wire plug ports to give you something to clip 12V power to. Try the different color combinations described in the string above to see what you're dealing with. You hook up power to a blue or green, and tug the pull start to see which way the prop turns or if the unit's in neutral. Make sure your controller feeds the + and - to the proper colored wires. Once you know what you've got you can cut the conectors off and wire it up direct if you want, using heat-shrink at the connections. But get it right!
