About one year ago i have bought an evinrude fastwin ( 18hp).I think he is older than me. But it seems to be dead. I have changed the fual pump and clean the carburator. Then I have put new high voltage cables... But it still be dead. One thing is very strange, if i change the highvoltage cables of above cilinder with the other, it had "shut"(i don't know how it calls sorry).
I don't know what can i do with this engine.
maybe you can help me.

Re: Evinrude Fastwin

OK, so we have a little language difficulty here, but that is OK. You speak English a lot better than I speak whatever it is that you speak in Belgium. See, I don't even know what language that would be!!!

Can you explain what you mean by "dead"? Are you saying you do not have spark on the wires? Or are you saying you do have spark and fuel, but it won't run?

You need to have 1/4" spark. What is that--probably around 6mm????

The coil closest to the front of the engine leads to the upper spark plug.

Bad, cracked coils are very common on those older motors. If they are cracked, don't waste your time on them, put in new ones. Breaker points should be clean and gapped to .020". Here we go again, I don't know how many mm that is.

Howdy, tolleke.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Go to the Engine Frequently Asked Questions. Read the "Outboard won't start" article.

That should get you started. Let us know what you found. :)

welcome tolleke. i have a 1955 15hp you have a great engine, just need to correct what is wrong. check for compression and spark. outboard won't start is a good place to start. a service manual would also be a great help. keep us posted. if you can get the model and serial number off the engine and post. that will help greatly.

I have changed the coils, but the spark is very bad. the compression is goed i have try it.
But the motor didn't start. i have try to give more fual under the coils, but it doesn't help.
One more question, where i can find the serial number?
someone have painted the engine before mee, so i can't find any numbers, neither the year of build.

There's a silver plug on the engine, about the size of your 20-Euro Cent coin. It will have a number stamped in it. Report back what it says and we can tell you what year it is.

Re: Evinrude Fastwin

I have a question? I purchased a boat and it came with a Evinrude Fastwin 15hp motor. I'm not sure of the year. The motor is blue and the cover is blue with a white strip down the middle with the word Evinrude on it the cover has a siler emblem on the side and on the front is a silver fastwin 15. I'm not sure if the motor runs, because it did not com with the tank, it pulls over. It looks to be in very good shap. I would like to sell it but I have no idea of what it's worth. Any help would be great.

Re: Evinrude Fastwin

You should have started a new thread.

Anyway, a good running 15hp JohnRude motor is highly desired.
Your best bet is to demo it running in a barrel.
Otherwise its considered a non-running motor,
which you're probably better off keeping until you have a need for it,
or make it a Christmas gift to an avid fisherman.

Look for your model number on a tag on the clamps.
Then we can determine the year.

When you changed the coils did you line up the armatures with the boss on the stator plate?Did you clean and adjust the points to .020. (51mm)?
Need to be on the high point of the cam when setting. All connections clean and tight?

Sorry Steelspike, I almost did the same thing. That was from a 3 year old thread...

Re: Evinrude Fastwin

Sounds like you have a 1956 Fastwin. You need a special two line pressure tank to run it. That motor is nice, but doesn't have much value. It'll cost about $200-250 to do a complete tune-up and gearcase reseal. Value after that work $200-350 with tank. Tank is about $50-100.
