Hi! I have a 1971 60 H.P. Evinrude Model 60173 E, works great in forward, works great in reverse. But when I hit the neutral button, it just goes to forward. Keeps on moving.. :(

Any ideas why this would be?

Also, I opened up the remote where the buttons are and it looks like one wire is pulled off and taped. Don't remember the color of that wire though.

the wire for neutral in the control box is green , connect it up , if it don't work then suspect the blocking diode for neutral

there are 2 brown wires one dark brown coming from under flywheel to the amplifier box the other one a lightish brown that one connects to the heat sensor & the horn in the control box it goes through the horn then comes out purple to the control box , could be that some one has changed the wires around

Re: Evinrude Forward/Reverse/No Neutral

You have a bad shift switch (push buttons switch). If it were a wiring problem, you wouldn't have reverse. Reverse requires BOTH neutral and reverse wires to be intact. Yes, before somebody suggests it, that includes the solenoids in the lower unit. One puts it in neutral, BOTH are required for reverse.

The blocking diode has nothing to do with it. The blocking diode keeps the shift circuit from feeding the ignition circuit. If it were bad, you couldn't turn the motor off.

The push button switch wires are green (neutral), blue (reverse---along with green), and (2) purple with green stripe wires (+) One comes from the blocking diode, other comes from the terminal board on the engine.

There is a loose grey tachometer wire and a tan warning horn wire in the control. Is your horn connected?

EDIT: OK, it is possible that some genius has screwed up the wiring and caused your symptoms. Are the green and blue both connected properly to your shift switch?

Blue is plugged in under the neutral button, with 2 purples across from it. Green is plugged in under the reverse button

Ok, let me know if this is correct...
The purple wires should be on the +
The blue should be on R
The green should be on N?

I do believe the blue and purple wires are on wrong terminals. Switch them and it probably will work. BTW, just for your information, that is not the original push button switch. It is a newer one for start-in-neutral-only function. Doesn't matter in your case because it is not wired for that feature. Just a feature you aren't using.

Thanks, yes, it appears they are wrong. I will try it out Saturday and hopefully it will work. I appreciate all of your help.
Now if I could only figure out how to pull the motor up because it locks itself on the trim/tilt pin and won't let go.. Think maybe the fact it wouldn't go into neutral caused it to latch?

Your tilt lock release lever is broken off. See your other thread.
