After connecting fuel line to fuel tank I noticed that I was unable to get primer bulb to go hard, there was a leak at connector, when examining this connector I could see the O ring was rough and looked as though it was turned, I put some petrolium Jelly on it, It then fitted onto tank easier but was still leaking, My question is this, fuel line has OMC on it and the connectors look very substantial, very well made, and not like the plastic rubbish I have seen, can I get same quality connector or are these ones old hat now?and should the fuel lines be left connected when not in use ie; left onto engine and tank, or can one obtain/ change O rings on the connectors. Thank you J.B.D.

Re: Evinrude fuel connector.

The Johnson/Evinrude dealer bulbs, line, and connectors are still pretty well the very best that are out there. It's a bit fiddley to do, but if it were mine I would just change out the o-rings. You can get replacements from the dealer. I belive they're metric o-rings, which we normally don't have in our hardware stores.

Re: Evinrude fuel connector.

Thanks Paul for information, yes even the primer bulb has different feel to it, the quality is somthing else, and a shame to butcher the end for an inferior cheap alternative, I will try main dealer for O rings, but over here I can't imagine success, it's chuck it away and use this, or we can't be bothered even to look or check, and are simply not interested unless it's off the shelve. will post to say if managed to obtain. thanks for now, J.B.D.

Another member posted and I captured "If you can find it locally, the o-ring is a metric one - 5mm ID x 3mm Wide (OMC PN 301824, Aftermarket pn 18-7111 each). Viton would be good. "<br /><br />EDIT: Found the member. It was Paul Moir, Sept. 12, 2004.

Re: Evinrude fuel connector.

Very good Boatbouy thanks very much for information, can you tell me what is involved in fitting same, does connector dismantle, or O ring come out and go in front? it looks as though the ball is spring loaded and presses against the O ring, A small pair of tweezers to get hold of it and same to replace? I didn't notice the increased effort to connect it to tank as O ring has been twisted, what is the best practice when not in use?leave fuel line off both engine and tank or keep connected? ans I would imagine that it is normal practice to replace these O rings on this equipment. Is Viton a main dealer U.S.A. thank you for great help, J.B.D.

Re: Evinrude fuel connector.

You've got it, it comes out the front rather than dismantling the connector. Getting the old one out is a little trickier than getting the new one in, but neither are very difficult. Especially if you can mount the connector in a vice to work on it.<br /><br />The best tools for the job is a small instrument to hold the ball down, and a small hook to grab the old o-ring and fold it out the hole. I use a hook made from an old paper clip and a very small hex key to hold the ball down.<br /><br />Viton is a brand name for a material some o-rings are made of. Most are Buna-N. Viton is superior but rarer.<br /><br />I suppose the best thing to do is unhook the fuel line when it's not in use. But I never take it off myself. Large outboards often don't even use those sorts of connectors.<br /><br />Oh, here's a service bulletin on how to make the tools:<br /> http://www.duckworksmagazine.com/02/columns/max/02/2-4.gif <br />Although a double-line fitting is shown, I've learned from alcan & others that it's a much better idea to disassemble those ones.

Re: Evinrude fuel connector.

Many thanks Paul and Boatbouy, I have just printed off the details of O ring replacment, what a site! the help is somthing else! I will post results if I locate O rings and and install same, I couldn't imagine throwing away tha good piece of OMC equipment, I do have a length of fuel line with aftermarket connectors on and the are very loose on engine compared to OMC one, thanks for now.
