Hey guy,

I was wondering if the Evinrude Selectric and Johnson Hydro Electric shifters are interchangable? I have the Evinrude shifter with the push button controls and the damn thing drives me CRAZY:eek::eek:, the whole concept of this setup is a bit unnatural... The model # on my motor is 125183C. Any input would be awesome!

I don't know why it wouldn't work.

I have been looking everywhere on the net and havent found anything concrete as to yes or no. I have a lead on a hydro electric shifter for next to nothing, but with all the electrical involved I dont want to just plug it in and assume.

Selectric and Hydroelectric are two very different shifting systems. I'm almost positive the controls are not interchangeable. Maybe someone else with more expertise will chime in.

Not interchangeable. A hydro-electric switch wired to a selectric will break the gearcase by putting it into forward and reverse at the same time

I have selectric and while looking through posts someone said this would not work and will wreck your clutch.

I thank you for the response. Its a shame these two shifters are not interchangeable. The motor runs like a dream, however it is becoming quite apparent why these setups where not very popular. In a bind or a hairy situation it would be very easy to cause a accident. I may start looking into another motor with a traditional mechanical shifter. The launch areas around here are always very crowded and I'd hate to be the cause of someone's injury or damage to another's property.

Re: Evinrude / Johnson Controls

If you look at the 1971 Johnson 125 and the Evinrude 125 all the parts are identical except for the controls. The two even use the same wires running for the control boxes everything under the cowl is the same. In the 50s and early 60s three were huge differences between the two brands by the Mid 70s everything was the same. I personally can't see why the 1971 Johnson controls wouldn't work.
