Evinrude lark 3 or 4. oil in the water???

Newbie here, just got my first boat. I have browsed on here for a while and decide to join and maybe get some help.

OK motor Evinrude 62 lark 4 on the cover, but the model number is 35525 which makes it a 61 lark 3? So I assume it is a lark 3?

Any ways fired it up for the first time and it seems to running great. The problem is that there appears to be oily sludge (light brown) in the water barrel after it has run for a few minutes. My bro worked as a boat mechanic for a while and said that i would probably some seal in the lower unit.

Tell me what do you the think the oily slug is and possible solutions for the problem. I could get a picture of the sludge if need be.

That light brown oily sludge is un-burned fuel/oil. Make sure you have the correct spark plugs and that they are gapped right. That happened to me once and I finally read my owners manual to learn that my plugs should be gapped at .040 instead of .030 like I had them. Re-gapped the plugs, cured the problem!

Grundge in the barrel is normal on these old motors; some fuel passes right through.
Just be sure plugs are the right heat range J4C my period manual says .030.
A certain amount of fuel remains in the cranckcase to lube the moving parts eventually passing into the exhaust leg to the water.
Also careful adjustmernt of the high and low speed needles helps.Just don't go to lean just to the best response.

In a barrel you will get a lot of oily sludge from unburt oil from the fuel.
You should be running a 24:1 mixture so there's quite a bit of oil going through it.

However you should check your gearcase oil for signs of water ingress. If it is milky drain it and refill it using new seals on the drain and level screws. Check it again after using it. If its milky again then be thinking about renewing the seals.

If its more than just a bit milky then change the seals anyway.

While doing the seals its a good time to also replace the waterpump impeller and housing too if it looks worn or damaged.

Currently recommended plugs are J4C and the revised gap is 0.030"

Thanks for the info. I was thinking that due to the high oil ratio that it was normal. I will check the oil in the lower unit and do a few more test on it but it really seems to work well.

How ever it did back fire 2-3 times when I first try to crank it over and once again yesterday when I started it. A really loud sound like pressurized air or something. Is that a symptom of anything. It had not been started in a year but it seems to be running great so far.

what about starting fluid? I had to give it a little to get it going, but now it does not need it. I would imagine it is not good for it but could be used in a pinch.

Was it a backfire or a sneeze? Sometimes they will sneeze a bit until they warm up. Try opening the low speed needle a little bit (counterclockwise).

Put a little pre-mixed fuel in a spray bottle and use that instead of starting fluid.

A sneeze is often called a "lean sneeze" because a two stroke tends to sneeze and spit back through the carb if the fuel/air mixture is too lean.

Yes avoid much use starting fluid because it contains no oil.
