Evinrude Lark VIII WOT issue

'66 Evinrude Lark VIII 40HP

Have not had a single issue in 3 years. Season finale trip in 2010 the carb float/needle stuck. I had a mechanic service/tuneup, impeller, rebuild carb, over winter. Today was first day out on water. Started right up, sounded great, runs smoother...BUT

Issue now is that I cannot seem to attain the same WOT as i had for the previous three years. I do not have a tach, so i cannot say for sure. If i had to guess, i would say that it feels like it max's out at 80-85% of its prior WOT. On the GPS I lost about 3 MPH (@12%). Prior WOT was 26/27MPH. Today it was 23ish.

The biggest indication is the sound. It just doesnt have the wide open scream that it used to reach at WOT. Any ideas ? A simple adjustment ? (carb/throttle?) If it is a simple fix, where would i find that on this engine ? Thanks in Advance.

My guess is the synchronization of the carburetor with the spark advance is off. Either that, or the remote control is not advancing the motor to full throttle. That might simply be the cable adjustment. The last little bit of control movement kicks it out of "cruise" position and into WOT (Wide Open Throttle)

What is all too often seen is somebody will "fix" a remote control by mis-adjusting the barrel on the rod linking the spark advance to the carburetor. It very well could be that was the sitution with your boat before you took it to the mechanic and he restored the motor linkage back to where it is supposed to be. He was absolutely correct in doing so. The cure for the problem is to repair the remote control and not monkey with the motor's linkage.

EDIT: Disconnect the throttle cable from the motor and manually operate the throttle on the motor (while somebody steers the boat). If you can get full throttle manually, but not with the remote control, fix the remote control. The usual problem behind all that was a broken cable inner wire at some time that somebody reattached instead of replaced.

What F_R said or you got some dirt again in the carb, I had a carb off 3 times off a 64 40 before it ran right then we installed a fuel filter (DUH)
