I just got this motor (it is frozen) and need service info. Any way to tell what year and model it is from the s/n 4906B-E01158 ?

Where can service manuals or parts lists be found?

That's a 1969 engine, and a great one at that.
If your new to outboards, I suggest you order the Seloc aftermarket repair manual from here. If you want a really in-depth and specific manual, order an OEM one from www.kencook.com. Frankly, I like having both. :)
Your local library might have one to borrow if you can't wait.
If the powerhead is frozen, try turning the carb side down, removing the sparkplugs, and spray in some penetrating oil. After a day of soaking, try carefully rocking the flywheel back and forth to free it. If the bearings and crank are seized, don't bother.

Where is the best place to buy parts for these old motors? I need points and condensors, rings, gaskets, etc. A local marine parts guy, who didn't seem to know much, said I have to order a "piston kit with wrist pin" in order to get rings. Is this true?

Jim

You can get most 'consumable' parts for that engine like ignition components and head gaskets as aftermarket parts from NAPA, or various places on the internet, in addition to OEM parts from your local Johnny/Rude dealer.
The rings are a different story. If your local dealer is unresponsive, your best luck is with Twin City outboards.
Failing that, this fellow has hooked me up with them in the past: partsforoutboards
Rings are often sold without pistons, by the way. If you don't have to bore out, and your pistons are in good shape, why not reuse them?

Good luck!

Good reading for a 4hp owner.

EDIT: Oh, and shop around. When I was searching for a set for my older 28hp, I crossreferenced a set from Hastings still made that would work. My local UAP/NAPA store manager and I both suffered the same ocular disfunction when Hastings suggested they'd let their dear rings go for $160.00 a set!
Thank God for NOS.

I need a rod for this 4HP Evinrude (Model 4906). Are there used parts to be had out there?

Jim

Hi Jim,
Your best bet for used parts would be to root around your local marinas. You might be able to turn up a junker/clunker with just what you need. The "good" thing about your quest is that most of those old fours only munched one rod, leaving the other in perfect shape. That said, if you can find another blown 4hp (same rods used from 1968 to 1976) you'll have plenty of spares...
Good luck!
- Scott
