i have a 1998 evinrude 40 hp. I was out trapping when i hit a log in reverse. I had been having problems with the lower unit not wanting to stay in reverse before this happened but whe i hit the log it exploded the shift dog, thusly destroying the case and gears and leaving me stranded. anyway i had a lower unit i got off a engine out of a junkyard so i went home to switch the lower units out. when i started looking at the lower unit that i was going to put back on the input shaft looked like the teeth were almost sheared off so i took the input shaft out of the old lower unit and swapped it out. and re-sealed the lower unit. my question is, is the input shaft has some up and down play in it and i was wondering if this is normal or did i forget some shims on the bearings? any help would be great thanks in advance!!

According to what I see, you have the nut, on the bottom of the driveshaft. That could possibly be loose.

thanks for the exploded view im positive i got that nut tight but you never know its not a ton of play but that changes the mesh between the ring and pinion gear so i know its kind of critical.
