I have a 1960 Lark 40, which has gearcase corrosion leaks that I can't stop.

Last year, I met a guy who had a warehouse down the street filled with 1974 OMC 40 hp spare parts that he bought from the Isreali Military. Made in Belgium, all in unopened dusty boxes. Bought a carb and two complete lower units that appeared to fit my engine. Price was irresistable.

Opened a box yesterday and saw that there are some differences I didn't notice before. These units don't have any water bypass ports above the cavitation plate. The water pump flange has different internal gates, and there are water tube connections in the center of the shroud below the water pump.

Question is - can this 1974 unit bolt onto my 1960 engine if I acquire the correct water pump and the different water tubes?
Externally, it looks like it will, but I need advice.

Re: Evinrude Lower Unit Interchange

Hi
Unfortunately i dont know about the gearcase house interchangeability, but i once repaired a corroded housing that had small leaks, by grinding it carefull with sandpaper and applying 2 thin layers of glassfibre reinforced polyester. You can buy special metalprimer to threat the grinded surface before you apply the polyester. Have you been doing glassfibre work before ? Its not difficult. The repair is permanent, It cannot be seen after painting, and its lasted many year now. ( not my motor, but i know ) Just to give you some idea.
