Evinrude Lower Unit Question.

I was wondering if anyone knows if a lower unit from a Evinrude 1972 55 hp with a shaft measurement of 17 3/4 would fit on a evinrude 1985 40 hp unsure of the lenght of the shaft on this one. To me they look exactly the same. <br /><br />Thank you.

There was not such engine as a 55hp in 72. they made a 3 cyl one in 68 and 69, and a 2 cyl model in 75 or 76 until 79, in 80 it became a 60
