I am replacing the outboard on my 24' 1997 Hydra Sport with something brand new...at least 250 HP. The family debate...Evinrude or Yamaha?? 2 Stroke or 4 stroke? What do you think??

I would love to test them both out. Supposedly the Evinrude has less emissions, is more fuel efficient, is lighter, and accelerates faster. I'd like to see that verified though. It seem that if it were true that people would be all over the Evinrude. However, I haven't seen the excitement to be there - at least not yet anyway.

you need to compare apples to apples here. The evinrude is 2 stroke and lighter, it all depends on what you want.

people in mass are very gullable and easily convinced.<br /><br />" 4 stroke" is the "new" "IN" thing in outboards now. 2 stroke is decades old. <br /><br />BUT......<br /><br />anybody with a true mechanical aptitude and a hold on what things are and what really makes things work in and on and around boats.... why would you want MORE weight, MORE moving parts, MORE maintenence. <br /><br />for all of the features that yamaha and all other 4 stroke outboard makers use as their claim over 2 strokes, you can get all of them and more in a new direct injection 2 stroke such as tohatsu or evinrude.<br /><br />BUT, in addition to a quiter motor, no smoke, smoother operation, better fuel effieciency.... you get all this and MORE with a direct injection 2 stroke such as a tohatsu or an evinrude . you get less moving parts and you get less weight.<br /><br />if you want to explore something, go explore the new(er) merc verado.<br /><br />its a 4 stroke( so what, its supercharged)<br />they get awfull gas milage and are WAYYYYYY heavier than anything else out there and have WAYYYYYY more moving parts than anything else out there. honestly, seriously, to an outboard boater, what advantage do they have other than the WOW factor? if you own one, email me, im seriously curious.<br /><br />mike
