I had my 79 35HP 2cycle running at the dock warming up for 15 minutes. Every so often, I hear a pop, then the engine almost dies, then continues to run. It may pop every 1-3 minutes. Any idea what this could be? There may be small amount of gas with stabil left over from last year in the tank, but not much. thanks!

does it do it when you are running or just idling? If you haven't cleaned your carb in the last couple of years I would do that first. Might have some trash in the pickup circuit or idle jet

Sounds like it's running to lean at idle. As said above carb job time.

I agree with boobie, it is running too lean, need to either adjust the carb or could be dirty and need to be cleaned and rebuilt.

Leave the settings alone for now and do a thorough carb cleaning. Once it's back together it might run fine.
