I have a 1977 V6 175 Hp Envirude. After 20-25 hours of operation, it will blow one or both power packs. I have had all voltage tested and it is constant. Local mechanics can not help. Anyone know the answer?
Wiltie

Re: Evinrude Powe Pack Problems

Wiltie.... Using a volt meter, set the scale to its lowest DC reading. Disconnect the black/yellow wires at the powerpacks.

Connect the meter (+) lead to the yellow/black wire (one at a time) and the (-) lead to ground.

A voltage reading, regardless of how minor it may be, at either of those black/yellow wires indicates that there is either a high resistance short in the wiring harness or at the ignition switch (my experience, it has always been the switch).

To check the switch, simply remove the black/yellow wire from the "M" terminal of the switch. If the voltage at the packs black/yellow wire ceases to exist, the ignition switch is faulty and will require replacing.

NOTE.... Some boaters make the mistake of using that black/yellow wire at the console portion of the instrument cable for a ground, leading from a tach, a gauge, etc. That will also result in having voltage thrown to the packs black/yellow wire, destroying both packs.

Hi Joe. Thanks for the information. One question, do I do the voltage test with the switch on or off?
Thanks wiltie

Wiltie... Have the switch in the ON position. However, regardless of the switch setting, there should be absolutley NO voltage being applied to that black/yellow wire, not even a slight fraction of a volt.
