Evinrude re-power?

As some of you know, I trashed my lower unit a week ago. I'm considering re-powering and trading-in rather than replacing my lower unit in order to get more fuel efficient. I could also use a little more horsepower. Wide open, this big carbed motor can burn 22 GPH while pushing a 4000 lb boat.

I'd like to stay with Evinrude/Johnson to keep the swap as easy as possible, i.e., bolt pattern, rigging, etc... I don't have much experience with DFI, EFI, or 4 strokes but know they are way more fuel efficient than my old workhorse.

What type of Evinrude/Johnson 225 should I consider for fuel effieciency and ease of replacement? Which should I stay clear of? I've read some terrible stories about 2000-2001 FICHT series.

Thanks in advance,

Tripple ditto. E-Tec, no question, end of story, period.

I'm taking that last comment as an endorsement of e-tec ? I just want to be clear about it. If so, there are no performance issues to speak of with e-tec ? I am also considering repowering soon. Two strokes that perform well will have obvious advantages.
