i am looking for a solenoide (starter motor), my local boat spares shop has told me that it is a discontinued one, and that i will have to replace the full starter motor ( not a cheap thing to do), does anyone know where i might be able to get one in UK. The engine is a evinrude 50hp two stroke, don't know age of engine but guess 80s. The solenoide is seperate from the starter and square in shape.

Re: evinrude solenoide

Am I missing something here? A solenoid is just a switch, right? As long as it can provide enough current for the starter motor, what else matters?

How many terminals (posts) on the original solenoid?

:cool:I don't think that you are missing anything, JTexas.

I don't think Dazzer would even be asking if he were not being handed a shovel full.

The Sierra parts are available world-wide and I am sure that he will find a local source.

Re: evinrude solenoide

The brown & black....one is grounded on the engine block, probably the black one, right? and the brown leads to the wiring harness plug?

When you turn the key to "start", 12V is applied to the brown wire, which energizes an electromagnet that closes the circuit between the positive and negative posts, which provides power to the starter motor.

Pretty much any starter solenoid will function in the same way.

Solenoids are solenoids!! Or are they??
Marine solenoids are spark proof so as not to start a fire or explosion being as they operate in a semi sealed environment.

Auto solenoids and marine outboard solenoids, many times, look identical. Fact is, internally, the wiring is quite a bit different. They may be the same for an I/O.
