Hello,

I have a 1969 Evinrude 18hp. It the motor is a 14 ft aluminum boat. I took the boat out today, it starts great, wbut when I put it in gear, and give it gas, it takes off, and the the motor just revs up. I have ton more throttle to go, it's like something is slipping. The prop is turning. Need your help please. What can it be??? I have a fishing trip planned in two weeks.

Thanks in advance

Sounds like a broken drive pin or spun prop hub.

Hi- my guess is a spun prop hub- if I'm wrong, I'm sure a pro will be here shortly! Scribe or paint a line that goes from the prop nut right across the face of the hub to the outside of the prop barrel, and take her for a short jaunt. If your lines no longer line up, you'll need to have your prop re-hubbed, or a new prop. Cheers- Chris
EDIT- Lookit that! I got out-typed by a pro! :D

Re: Evinrude - something is slipping?

I just had the same problem yesterday and it was a spun hub. Replaced the prop and was good as new.:D

One of the experts here told me that there are two hubs in the prop and that the rubber bushing gets worn out not locking the outer hub causing the high RPM's and no go.

Not sure if that is your problem, but sure is a known problem and easy to fix if you have another prop.

Would I be correct in saying if it has a pin there isn't a rubber hub on it, isn't it either or?

Buddy had a small outboard with a pin and I almost remember the prop was solid.

Pull the prop and see if you sheared the pin, if so replace and keep a couple with the boat just in case.

That would be true if it was a 5.5 or 7.5 hp of that era. The 18 hp had both. The 5.5 and 7.5 hp had a shock absorber in the lower unit and didn't need the rubber hub.
