Hello all,

I have a late 70's 25HP Evinrude outboard. I have had problems with the the starter drive/gear. The starter is mounted to the block (I believe) and over time has pivoted down and away from the large gear on top. This has slowly stripped my starter drive/gear. I need to replace the gear and have tried everything to get that top nut off. Does anyone know a good way to do this? Also, any recommendations for fixing the starter so that it doesn't move away from the large gear?

Thank you,

P.S. This boat was just passed down to me from my grandfather. I am a woman with little experience on these type of things, but I would much rather go at it myself. This is why I don't know many of the techinical terms, soorryy!

Re: Evinrude starter drive replacement

Remove the entire starter, and have it rebuilt, or replaced. To remove top nut. Grasp pinion gear with large channel lock pliers, turn off nut.

I have tried to grasp the pinion gear and remove the nut, but I can't seem to get it. Could it be a reverse thread possibly?
