If the battery cables are connected properly at both the battery and the engine, either the battery is charged backwards or the starter brushes are not installed properly.<br /><br />It is just about impossible to have the brushes installed wrong on the majority of starters that are now used.<br /><br />If the battery is charged backwards (reverse polarity), hook up lights or something to it which will discharge it completely, then charge it properly.<br /><br />Also, if reverse polarity is the cause, I would suspect that this has caused the charging rectifier to become faulty.
