I have a 1996 35 hp 3 cylinder. The problem is the starter goes in reverse when I turn on the key. My battery is connected properly. I don't have a clue!

Re: Evinrude starter

If the battery cables are connected properly at both the battery and the engine, either the battery is charged backwards or the starter brushes are not installed properly.

It is just about impossible to have the brushes installed wrong on the majority of starters that are now used.

If the battery is charged backwards (reverse polarity), hook up lights or something to it which will discharge it completely, then charge it properly.

Also, if reverse polarity is the cause, I would suspect that this has caused the charging rectifier to become faulty.

Re: Evinrude starter

A tad more info would help. It goes in reverse -- compared to what? The flywheel rotation? Its supposed to. Also you said when you turn the key "on". Do you mean the starter starts spinning without moving the key to the "on" position before you turn it to the "start" position?

Re: Evinrude starter

When I take the starter off the engine and ground the starter and put the possitive on the post the starter works perfect (With the boat battery ,it ingages the right rotation). When I put it back on the engine and turn on the key, the bendix spins in reverse. Hope this helps

Re: Evinrude starter

Got to ask: Is the starter turning counter-clockwise when on the motor? Is the positive battery cable connected to the solenoid and the other large connector on the solenoid going to the starter? Are you using a marine solenoid?
Thanks
