Evinrude starting problem

I have and "87" 70 horse evinrude VRO. The problem is that sometimes it just doesn't want to start. I was told that that this motor has an electric primer not a choke. And to squeeze the primer bulb about six times and then to turn the key to the on position and push in for about 8 second prior to starting, then start. About 2/3 of the time it works just fine, and the other third you can do the same thing and it will not start until you pull the cowl off and turn the little red knob on the primer solenoid and then it starts right up.

I have already installed a new gas line/primer bulb unit, and that didn't help at all.

One other thing to note the primer bulb never gets hard no matter how many times I squeeze it, and it is new.

Other than this starting problem the thing run great.

Anyone have any ideas I can try?

Re: Evinrude starting problem

Hi svangui1, 8 seconds to me is going to flood the engine making it hard to start! If the ball doesn't stay hard buy a whole new fuel line. Try not to buy one a Wal-Mart or K-Mart these are good fo about one year and the ball gets hard. Just buy some fuel line at the Boat store of your choise and make your own. You can use your old connections. Don't need to move the red lever to operate your motor Make sure it points toward the back of the engine. And leave it till you winterise next year! Check to see that the primer is working. pull off the tiny fuel ines in the back of the carb and have some one push te key you wll see fuel come out. If they have never been changed maybe nows the time. maybe one is off. And go buy a book on the these motors they cost about 15 to 25 bucks on ebay. it will save you so much time in the long run.

Re: Evinrude starting problem

I have a 98 evinrude 115. The 8 second thing works great for me on those cold mornings. Before I discovered this, it would take me forever to get her running when it's cold outside. Check out some other posts here, about the same problem. My question is, what is the little red knob on the solenoid? I can't find any reference to this in the Clymer's manual. Thanks for any help.

Stinky2,

Last year I replaced the gas line along with the bulb with an OMC unit, looked at the cheapo department store stuff and didn't want to bother. I have never had the thing flood yet holding it for 8 secs. I do like the idea of changing all the under the cowl gas line tho, now that I think about it the may be why the bulb will not firm up.

I do have a Seloc book for the motor and it is rather vague on this problem.

Hatteras Junkie,

To quote from the book "if the battery is dead and choking effect is desired, a lever on the soleniod may be move to the MANUAL postion opening the seat in the valve. When the squeeze bulb is activated, fuel will pass through the nozzles directly into the cylinders"

Unless the engine is cranking, holding the choke button for 8 seconds is a waste of 7 seconds. The primer will only allow fuel under pressure into the intake. Once that initial spuirt is over you need the fuel pump pulsing to get any more fuel thru the choke primer. Try holding the choke button in while you crank.

Re: Evinrude starting problem

The saga continues.

Because I could never get the primer bulb(new omc unit, along with new lines) to get firm no matter how long I pumped the bulb, I started to look for leaks in the lines under the cowl. Found that the fuel nipple on the top of the fuel/VRO pump was cracked off, being held in place by just the pressure of parts around it. Replaced pump with a new unit, very costly unit I might add. Now it will pump up pressure for the first start of the day and fire right up no problem.

The problem now is about half the time that I start it later in the day it won't start and I have to manually choke it to get it going. And the primer bulb will not hold pressure when it does this, it also it smokes like crazy for the 1st minute or so. This would be alot easier to figure out if it failed everytime.

It runs great other than this issue, I also picked up about 150 rpm at WOT with the new fuel/VRO pump.

I am thinking maybe the primer/choke solenoid, but that is just a hunch, not real experienced with outboards. Any one got any ideas?

'mornin' svangui1,

per your last post, i'd start looking at the tank & bulb/Fuel line. if the bulb wount hold pressure, there has got to be a reason. the line (tank side of bulb) is collapsing, the bulb has a faulty valve or maybe a pinhole, and/or there's an obstruction at the "pick-up" in the tank.

can you get your hands on another tank/fuel line? this could help to narrow down/isolate the problem.

Good Luck

Re: Evinrude starting problem

klondike7,

Since I replaced the broken VRO pump most of the time it does hold pressure . I replaced the bulb and fuel lines late last year and it did exactly the same thing as it did with the old bulb and lines, until I changed the VRO pump. There was a nipple on the top of the pump where the mixed fuel leaves the pump that was cracked off. The only thing that kept it feeding fuel at all was that the line was pushed against the block and kept kinda in place.

The only time it seems to do this is when it has been sitting for about an hour or so and then I try starting it again.

It seems to me like something is sticking open on those occasions it won't start. Just not sure what it is.

Re: Evinrude starting problem

Hey guys, I have a 1996 150 evinrude intruder. I had the same problem with the cold start issue. First off the red lever at the primer soleinoid was cracked, This is a common problem Ive been told. Secondly I had some loose fuel line under the cowling. Since I took care of these issues Ive had zero problems starting my EVINRUDE. So I hope this helps. Bassnut In Kansas City. :)
