Can someone explain what the correct way to start this motor? I always had trouble getting it to start without a lot of pulls. Should the primer on the right be in or out? How many times should I pump it? Should I be pressing gas line bulb? Any info would be great.

#1 pump the ball on gas line until hard
#2 pump manual primer twice and leave out
#3 Turn throttle toward fast until it stops. (make sure it is in neutral)
#4 start motor and when it starts to bog push primer in
#5 Back off throttle as motor starts to rev.

You may need more or less pumps on the primer you will need to figure that out.

Should the front choke plate be closed when starting? It’s open in picture but I can manually close if needed

You should not have a manual choke plate. Put up a pic of this plate and motor. If you are talking about the plate at the back of the carb, That is the throttle plate and may open a wee bit for starting in neutral. But should not be open all the way unless the motor is in gear.

? That carb is not a 1990 25 hp carb. My guess is somebody stuck an older 35 hp carb on that. I would also bet they ran the primer line to the lower nipple and eliminated the one on the carb. Open the choke and pump the primer twice and see if it runs. I just sold a 1988 25 hp and that is not the correct carb for your motor.

Any benefits by putting 35hp carb on it? The primer line does appear to run to bottom nipple.

Might be a 35/25/20 hp carb who knows. I am just guessing and it may run good or it may run like poo poo.

Boat runs great once I get it started. Also starts on first pull after it’s been started. So prime twice and leave primer out and have throttle all the way open in neutral. Then Treat primer like a choke and push in as it starts to bog down. Then easy off throttle. I will give it a shot.
