I have a 1978 evinrude 70873c 70 hp. There appears to be no place on shifter to connect tach. There is a tach on the boat of Yamaha brand. Will this tach work on a evinrude? If so, is there a wiring diagram available so I can connect it?

There will be a connector on the side mount controller that a pigtail connects to. This then goes to the instruments. Good luck finding the part number and availability. You would need an old accessories manual.

I will post pic tomorrow, at work now. Can it be done with a spool of wire?

If you don't have the pigtail for the tach hookup on your control box, it may be because your control box is a year or two earlier. On these earlier control boxes, the factory made provision for adding a tach. If you open up the control box, you will find the factory left a gray wire pigtail wound up inside the control box. There is a single hole on the under side of the control box where you can draw the grey wire end down and out of the box. That grey wire is the signal wire to drive the tach. Marine tachs are usually made in a universal configuration, so it should work. Just make sure the tach selector switch on the back is set to the correct number of poles on the alternator.

Thanks, I do have the 3 pin connector on the control box. I will order a harness and see if it works
