Hi. I need help finding some info about a TM before I decide to buy it. It's listed as an "Evinrude Scout", 12v, 36 inch shaft, foot control, bow mount, it's all black except for the shaft which is aluminum/silver. Seller knows nothing more than that, although I'm trying to get a model number from him.

I currently have a 12/24v Johnson TM (mod JBF4T c. early 1980's) that puts out 31 lbs thrust drawing 29 amps, and looks identical to the Scout except for the color (mine's all white with alum/silver shaft). Does anyone know if this Scout motor will match or better that thrust? Is anyone familiar with this "Scout" series? It looks like all the other OMC TMs. Any information would be greatly appreciated? Thanks.

Re: Evinrude TM ID help

Hey Larry, welcome to iboats.

Your model number indicates a 1987 year. I believe yours is a Scout. The difference is in the lower unit motor when it comes to power output. The rest pretty much looks the same. The prop diameter sounds a little large at 12". The original prop is an 8 3/4 X 4.

I'll have to check the books when I get to the shop. I'm going off memory (what's left) right now. :)

Re: Evinrude TM ID help

Thanks OBJ.

Since TMs have improved greatly in recent years, I'm looking for an OMC trolling motor that will give me more thrust on 12v than my TM can on 24v. Are there later model OMC TMs that will do that?

Re: Evinrude TM ID help

Generally speaking Larry, 31-32 lbs on 12V's is about as good as you'll get with the John/Rude TM's. Minn Kota and Motor Guide offer TM's that go very high in thrust on 12V....up to 55lb...maybe better. Now if yer a die hard John/Rude TM fan, straight 24 with 5 speeds is the way to go....if ya' can find one.

Re: Evinrude TM ID help

I want the 12v TM so I can ditch one battery and get rid of 60 lbs of dead weight in my boat (more room, more speed, etc). And if I can find an OMC motor, swapping them will be a five minute job. Putting a new motor on my boat isn't worth it, her glory days are behind her. I'll buy a new boat first.

But the problem is finding specs on older TMs. Sellers of used TMs seem to know surprisingly little about them. Do you know of a source for OMC TM info?
