Evinrude trim problems

Just bought an Imperial boat with 70hp 1977 Evinrude. I think the trim is after-market. When we first got the boat the trim worked fine. While working on the boat and testing it the trim would only go down, then it wouldn't move the motor at all. We replaced the (selanoid)? under advice from the local marina, but it still doesn't work. When we toggle the switch there is a clicking sound in the selanoid. Any ideas?

LawnDog.... What is the "Model Number" of the engine you purchased? Also, the normal OMC P/T/T unit for a 1977 model would be a one piece unit that is sandwiched between the engine transom brackets (the bkts that bolt to the boat). If you do not have this type PTT, describe what you have in as mich detail as possible.

Mr. Reeves,<br />I'm not exactly sure where to look for the model number. There is a butterfly shped plate connecting the two control arms. the pump is to the lower right if your looking at the back of the boat.

LawnDog...... That sounds like the original (1st) type of PTT that OMC manufactured back in 1973 or 1974, really not a great design. The model and serial numbers can be found on a plate on the port (left) transom bracket (bkt that's bolted to the boat), and there is also a quarter size core plug on the powerhead (Looks like a small freeze out plug) that has those numbers. Get the "Model" number to us.

Re: Evinrude trim problems

LawnDog.... That model number indicates a 1977 70hp Evinrude, and from what you've said about the PTT assy, it appears to be the first type that OMC came out with. It sounds like you have power going to the solenoid (clicking), but either have no voltage going to the electric motor, or the electric motor or wiring is faulty. You could try unplugging the conecctor that leads to the elecric motor, then running (with jumper wires) voltage directly to it. That would show you if the motor was okay or not and lead you in the proper direction to trouble shoot. Good Luck.

Re: Evinrude trim problems

the wiring on this thing is unbelievable and we are having a pretty hard time making sense of all the random wires. We may have to just put it in the shop to be rewired. Thanks for the help.
