Hi Folks,
I own a 92 Evinrude 90 v4 w/ the VRO2 fuel/oil pump and when starting she smokes like a banshy, Starting this motor is very difficult and seems like the thing is getting to much oil. The only way I get it going is to keep pushing the choke every 5 seconds until she finally gets warmed up after 7 minutes. During this whole process smoke is just pouring out of the motor, once she is warm the smoke goes away. Anyone have this problem or recommendations.

Thanks.

Join the club!! I have owned 3 different pairs of omc's, and they have all done the same. v-4 and v-6's both. My motors now are 1996 225's and I am the joke of all my merc and yamaha friends because it looks like a james bond device when my engines are cold.
The bright side is you dont have any mosquito problems.

Is there any remedy, is the vro gone bad or should I disconnect it entirely?

I worked on a friends V4-90 Johnny for him and he had the same complaints as you and when trimmed up oil would puddle around the carbs and front of motor. What I found out - There is a check valve inside of the VRO that is notourious for going bad or just not entirely closing therefore allowing oil to seep by. I was told OMC does not make a rebuild kit anymore (although someone on this board recently aquired one?) and a new pump is $235. Being the thrifty friend that he is, I disconnected the VRO and now he premixes, I also rebuilt the carbs and put in new plugs for him and the boat is screaming like never before according to him. Hope this helps.

The check valves are bad in the pump. Place in Texas rebuilds some models of the VRO and replaces the check valves. Remote oil tank has vent, not sure about this, but if vent is not working summer heat may push some oil pass the check valve. There was a machinest that posted on Boatered that made a check valve, placed in oil line before pump, said it worked good and stopped the smokeing.

I'm still waiting for my kit, only been a week but try http://www.maxrules.com/ He had the kit(s) I needed for my 1985 Evinrude 120hp VRO pump. Guess the 2 kits are for fuel side and air/suction side. Looks like I'll need someone to keep squeezing my primer bulb again this weekend.

I had the exact same problem on my v4 Evinrude. I disconnected the VRO and mix gas 50:1. Problem is solved.
