Looking at buying a boat that the owner tells me has a evinrude 140hp. just curious to roughly know what year model this engine is? also what is the difference between evinrude and johnson in this particular motor? Engine has been painted so it has no markings on cover. Thanks

Scotty,

Need more inmformation. The serial and model numbers would help everyone identify yhe engine's model year and type.

Evinrude/Johnson produced a 140 V-4 in two configurations.

1. Cross Flow (late seventies, early eighties.
2. Loop Charged (Eighties)

There has been NO difference in Evinrudes and Johnsons (except paint) until lately.

The newer Evinrude V-4's are of the 60 degree design and were/are Ficht injected. The Johnsons were of the same basic design with carburetors.

There are still an Evinrude or Johnson V-4 available today.

They are now built by Bombardier. OMC, the parent comapny previously, went bankrupt in 2001. Not to worry, parts are still readily available and Bombardier plans to continue the supply.

thanks for your help so basically you are telling me this motor could have been made anywhere from the seventies to 2002. guess i'll have to go and have another look and get some numbers.

IF the motor has two 2-barrel carbs made of aluminum positioned one above the other, it is a cross-flow from the late 70's.
If there are 4 individual plastic carbs, you have a "looper" from the mid 80's on up.

Scotty,

Sea Horse is partially correct.

My 1983 (crossflow) has aluminum carbs, one over the other. The crossflows were built into the 90's, not as a 140 though. Only 88, 90, 100, 110 & 112 hp.
