I have an evinrude v6 and I believe it is a 1989 but im not sure. I can find no nameplate on the block or the mounting bracket. there is a silver round plate on the top with the numbers R8157534 on it (about the size of a quarter). Is there anywhere else i might get the model number and serial number?

I believe this motor came with the original boat which is a 1989 21.5' Hydrasport dual console. Its oil injected and has hydraulic steering.

thanks for any help

Hi Dale, Look real carefully at the motor mount bracket clamp. If the clamp has been painted, the number is probably under paint. The model decal is rectuangular in shape, usually on the left side of the clamp. Hope you can get it located. The quarter size plate numbers turned up nothing with me.

R8157534 is most likely the serial number. A dealer can look it up for you. Just warning you that many motors that have the ID plate gone were stolen at some point.

R8157534 is probably a replacement powerhead, so no help. The "plates" on the transom brackets were stickers on those models and they came off or wore to the point where they were not legible.

There are noticeable differences between years in the late 80's and earlier 90's, so pictures of the cowlings and engine might help with identification.

Where I would expect the nameplate to be there are 2 rectangular imprints in the paint where its likely there were stickers at one time so thats probably the case. Thanks all for your help, if i can get use of a digital camera I will post photos and see if any of you experts can identify the likely model.
