I have a 66 evinrude 6hp on a 14' jon boat that looks factory new. I also have a 69 johnson 9.5hp that I just rebuilt on an 12' jon boat. I like the 14' boat but am torn as to which motor to run on it. I am selling the 12' boat and one of the motors to a friend. The 6hp has NEVER given me any problems but lacks that umph. I mean I am the slowest boat on the river at wot. I just took the 9.5hp out and it flys at wot. Im getting good water flow out the water port on the 9.5 but when I landed the boat the engine was hot to the touch. Not scorching but just enough to not want to touch it. Can anyone tell me a) is this normal and b) which motor is statistically more dependable. -woody74

Well, you'd probably be happier with the 9.5 on that 14 footer.<br /><br />What part of the engine were you touching when you say it was hot? Did you actually touch it or did it just feel hot before you touched it?<br /><br />How was it running?<br /><br />Those 9.5's are a bit annoying to work on, frankly, with that big outer cover and all.

The engine ought to get nice and hot. Your description sounds like it's about perfect temperature wise if you were touching the block near the back or the top of the head.<br />If you can get around the 9.5hp's looks, go for it! <br /><br />(Hope I don't get flack from Wayne and lakelover.. )

Now, those 9.5's aren't ugly...not at all. At least not until you have to work on them. Then they get ugly right quick, IMO.<br /><br />Now, mind you, I'd never own one. They always look like they're mostly underwater. I like my outboards to stand right up.

CA, Paul,<br />Thanks guys, I was touching the block at the rear but the plugs didn't seem hot at all. The 9.5 motor runs great, it does like to slip on the idle a bit, like when it idles the timing seems to click a LOT and the timing arm always pulls toward stop. Does this make sense? But as for the motor looks, I really dont care how anything out there looks, its all in how it runs, how it lasts, and how easy/hard it is to work on. So far things are pretty straight forward and easy to work on. -woody74

Like Paul said, then, it's not really running hot. If you can touch the block and hold your finger there for a little while before you have to pull it away, you're OK.<br /><br />I haven't owned that motor, so I can't advise you on your idle question. It's really easy to work on the top end of that engine, though. It's the midsection that's a PITA.

Aux contraire! Let's make problems for him. <br /><br />Sounds like you've got the infamous wobbly armature plate. Check out Joe Reeves' excellent and simple fix:<br />Click here. <br /><br />(All my armature plate supports are dented up now, and nice and tight. I hate that clack-clack-clack at idle)<br /><br />Remember, if it ain't broke, it could probably be made to work better.

Im not sure if we are talking about the same thing here. Mine goes whizz, whizz, whizz and the throttle itself slowly works itself down to a very low idle and eventually turns the throttle completely to stop. I still have to find that ultimate sweet spot on the low needle but I am in the ballpark for sure. Is this motor supposed to look like it is sinking and does getting water in the cowling at trolling speed sound strange on a 12ft jon boat. I mean this thing is pointed skyward like a rocket until wot where everything just comes right into plane. Huh!!

Just reach up under the flywheel and give the armature plate (the part that turns when you advance the throttle) a little wiggle. If it wiggles too much, the ignition coils on top of it will hit the inside of the flywheel. When the coils bump, it pushes the throttle down.

It never hurts to replace an impellor!
