I have an older 15hp White top Blue bottom. The problem I have when I am running and in idle I get good water out of the weep hole. Last year while fishing the Missippii river going with the current,(about 3mph) and trolling the water pump quite working. I had to put it in nautrul, give it gas to get the pump to work and cool down the eng. Going against the current no problem. Could the above things some how cause the pump to cavitate or something along those lines Thanks

Re: evinrude water pump

If it has one of the pickups that are a tube running down from the cav plate, then I think your impeller is shot..

I had a lark 40 and its water pump was completely clagged but I used it for ages just fine.
the pickup on those faces forward and water pressure will force water up the leg.

when trolling at low rpm, with the current, there is much less water pressure against the pickup as a result, the pump isn't getting the help it otherwise was.. when was the last time you changed the impeller?

a quick test.. take the cover off your motor..
then put it in reverse and regularly feel the top of the head while you are doin it..

if your impeller is shot, it will get hot pretty quickly.

(be sure to turn it off as soon as it gets to hot to touch for 5 seconds.)

Or a better test would be to take the lower unit off and have a look.

regards

Frank

Re: evinrude water pump

Thanks so far, but I had replaced the impller and like I said, it only seems to lose pressure when going with the current. Ialso checked to insure the tube from the water pump housing up to the block was installed in the rubber sleeve that is on the pump. I am stumped
