Evinrude wiring question

I originally posted this over in the wiring forum, but you guys might be a better place to find an answer.

I am in the process of rebuilding an Arrow Glass from the early 70's. It was damaged ( a tree fell on it ), and the original owner had begun the process of replacing the things that were damaged, but never got around to actually hooking anything up. He had picked up a 1985 Evinrude 40 hp ( model 40elc0 ), and I'm to the point that I'm trying to get it to crank. My hold up now is wiring the ignition. I've spent several hours looking at wiring diagrams, and I'm stumped. Here's my weird question: All of the diagrams for the red amphenol connector inside the motor cowling show eight wires, but I only have seven. Any idea where I might find a wiring diagram that would work for this?
My second issue: The harness from the actual ignition switch only has five wires, and is a black amphenol, so it doesn't mate with the red amphenol in the motor.
My switch has the following identifiers on the back, wired to these colors:
A, wired to White
B, wired to Red
C, wired to Purple
I, not connected
M, wired to Black with a White Stripe
M (raised), wired to Black.
This terminates at a black amphenol connector. My motor has the red connector, so obviously they don't mate. I want to cut off the amphenols and hard wire these connections. Is there a reason that I can't? Can anybody offer some hints on what to connect? I have an idea of what goes where, but I'm not sure on where my 12v accessory connects and if I should connect the "I" lug to my starter circuit. Thanks again,
Wes H

I looked at the maxrules charts and they don't have my model or year. The closest thing to mine looks totally different. The second link, to the wiring colors, is interesting. The odd thing is that my connector from the motor doesn't have a purple wire, which should be the ignition. I have a purple with white stripe ( to choke) and a purple with a red stripe ( not listed in the chart). Am I safe to assume that the purple with red stripe is my ignition? Thanks for the replies.

I also don't have a solid red wire, if that means anything. From the motor to the red amphenol, I have:
Black/yellow
Yellow/red
Purple/white
Purple/red
Gray
Tan
Black

have you tried the boatinfo site? to bad the forums are a bit wonky with the "upgrade" going on, F_R's info would most likely have been right on the money!

The boatinfo site is great, thanks for that link. I think I found the wiring diagram for my motor, but the text is essentially unreadable. I'll try to pick up a hardcopy of the service manual, but until I have that, is there any reason that removing the amphenol plugs and hardwiring the connections would be undesirable?

What is wrong with the diagram I posted? It shows how it should look. But you already said you have the wrong harness, and black plug. Of course the wire colors don't match. But electricity doesn't care what color the insulation is, it only cares where it goes. So, if you pay attention to the diagram, and hard wire it accordingly (by routing, not color), it should work.

The diagram you posted never came through, at least to me. I know the forums are acting up, but it just shows as a broken image link on my end. And yes, I understand that the two harnesses have different wire colors. Maybe your diagram would clear it up for me. I suppose my real question is not about the wire colors, but the number of wires: I have seven wires coming from the motor, and only five wired to the switch. I can certainly follow a wire routing diagram, but nothing I've found online shows the harness that I actually have, which makes it difficult. Thanks again,
Wes
