Disconnected VRO. I still need to go thru a few gallons of Quicksilver Premium Plus but just wanted to know if XD50 is worth the extra money over the XD30.

Not for a carbed outboard.

Good oil and good fuel are the two cheapest things you can buy for an engine.

The XD50 has a carbon guard additive. That additive reduces long-term carbon accumlation around the ringsets and the piston skirts. It's an especially helpful additive on these V4 and V6 crossflow engines.

Talked to Evinrude tech and he said XD30 is fine for carbureted engines like I got and XD50 is used on direct injected as JB conveyed. I will bring this point up to them and let you know the response.

I run XD100 in my 87 225. I fined that it smokes alot less and after a year use the pistons and head where not carboned up at all. Also my plugs just started turning black after 70 hrs of use. There is a difference.

XD-30 Conventional oil = Minimal protection
XD-50 Semi Synthetic = carbon guard
XD-100 Full Synthetic = carbon guard and minimal smoke..... Plus metter for enviroment.

My deal recommends that the XD-100 is for both carbs and injected. The E-teks require XD-50 and XD-100. But the cabrs you can run anything. Also the full synthetic extends the life of the engine over the XD-30. A motor is only good for so many hrs. Why not get the most out of it.

I'm an economical guy so how about XD30 with some SEAFOAM added ? Wouldn't that work ?

Seafoam will help. Get a can of Power Tune , around 13 bucks, at the local dealer and use as derected on can every so often will clean the rings, carbs, and pistons when needed.

Sorry to jump on the OP's thread, but what do you guys think about using Pennzoil XLF in a 1999 Johnson 150 Carb? I used it for 3 years in a Yamaha 200 HPDI and it smoked less than than Yamalube. $16.50/gallon at Wally World.

If you add seafoam to the fuel, it's the same as using XD50-which has the carbon guard additive already in the oil. And you don't have to measure it into the tank as you add fuel...

XD-50 is a semi synthetic, It not only has carbon guard.

I look at oil as a lubercant 1st. Synthetic and Semi Synthetic reduces the amount of wear that is cause in the rings due to use/friction. The carbon guard is only an add on. A good one mind you.....

I do not want to have to rebuild my motor any time soon again. So I run Full Synthetic. Simple. I still add carbon guard once a year to a tank and I use Stabalize for the ethinol when I know if the boat is going to sit for a while.

But Oil is a lub first. Wear is bad!

Re: Evinrude XD30 or XD50 for 1987 90HP

I have been asking myself these same questions. I run a 17' Boston Whaler with a 1997 90hp Johnson Ocean Runner. After you buy the XD-30, and a can of Seafoam ($10), it would be cheaper to just buy the XD-50.

Do am internet search, you will find the XD oils fairly priced. I am finally switching from the XD-30 to XD-50. This is my first post/reply. The information here is fantastic!
