Evnirude 4HP (1988) - Retrofit a Kill-switch/cord

I have just resurrected an old Evinrude 4HP (1988) 2-cylinder 2-stroke which a friend found at the back of a garage. Fortunately it was mainly a carb rebuild and I didn't have to take the the flywheel off to get to the magneto.

This engine is powerful enough to make my SiB plane, hence I would like to fit a kill switch/cord.

I understand I will need to get to the magneto which entails taking off the flywheel for which I would need a 'puller'. Anyone have details of what puller I would need?

To kill the engine I think I will need to ground the points. When I get to the magneto where would I have to attach a wire(s?) in order to ground the points? What sort of voltage would this wire need to carry? This wire would then go to a kill switch/cord; the other switch wire connection would then need to grounded back on the engine somewhere (suggestions?).

Thanks for any help - or a picture would be great :)

You will need a 3 ear puller, like a harmonic balencer puller. Make sure and use grade 8 bolts.
If you are using a spring loaded kill switch with a lanyard, just connect the wires from the switch to the points. One wire to each set of points, when you pull the lanyard from the switch you will ground the points to each other and kill the engine.

OK - doesn't sound too difficult. Thanks for the info.

BTW would the "Seagull" Flywheel replacement method work for this engine? "Seagull" method seems to be basically getting a little play out of the engine shaft and then bashing it with a hammer. I'm guessing its pretty easy to put the flywheel back once it has been removed.

Best to use a puller to remove the flywheel, might pervent damage to the flywheel by hitting it with a hammer.

Many auto parts stores loan with deposit or rent tools for a very reasonable price. A puller is not expensive though you may need to buy better bolts for this one 46 Piece Bolt-Type Wheel Puller Set

If smacking it with a rubber hammer won't loose it, please don't abuse your motor.
