Exhaust bellows - moulten plastic

Removed my drive yesterday and found 2 lumps of moulten plastic in the exhaust bellows. Did have an issue sometime ago with a Perko valve breaking and causing overheating.
Not had a chance yet to check engine side bellows but all looks OK from the outside with no leaks and has been running fine.
My thoughts are the flappers but understand Volvo say they are no longer required? Should I replace anyway?

Ayuh,... My guess is, Yer right....

Personally, if it's Boat, it needs Shutters...
unless yer runnin' High, 'n Dry pipes....

Yes, they stopped using them in 99, See service bulletin below. They also stopped selling them.
