exhaust coming from my tell tale!

Hi,
I just put together a 77 115 from 3 old out to pasture engines. I just replaced the power head from one of them onto the good lower unit, trim tilt bracket- mid section that I scabbed together from the others. It started up beautifuly but I noticed no pee from tell tale. I took the hose off and saw exhaust coming from it! I felt the exhaust cover and it was hot! Obviously no water going through. The lower unit has a new impeller so that is not the prob.
Anyone ever heard of this happening? I am thinking that the gasket on the bottom of the power head is broken between the exhaust and water sides.
Any knowledgeable answers would be greatly apprecicated.

Does that motor suck water in when you start it up on the flusher? You should see water spray pretty good with the motor off. Now start it up and see if the spray diminshes. If not, the pump ain't

I took the powerhead off to inspect the gasket. I bought a tube of gasket maker at Autozone and ran it around the base.

Result....Awesome water pressure throughout engine and pee hole.

I didn''t torque down the powerhead properly when I first assembled it (read; I forgot to put the nuts on at all), and blew the gasket.

Oh yea...I took someones advice and drilled out the pee hole fitting a little. The stream is much more noticable and less prone to clogging.
